DIY Decoupage End Table Makeover (From Curbside Find to Cozy Favorite)

About a year ago, I found the cutest little end table sitting on the curb waiting for trash pickup. I brought it home thinking I’d eventually give it a makeover… and this was finally the perfect project.

It was pretty beat up from sitting outside — cracked, dirty, and worn — but that actually made it the ideal piece to experiment with fabric decoupage. If it was already damaged, why not try something creative?

Now it’s the perfect little table for my coffee and a book next to my favorite cozy chair — and I love that it started as curbside treasure.

Supplies Needed

All supplies are easy to find at Walmart:

• Small end table (thrifted or curbside find)
• Sandpaper
• Wood filler (if needed for cracks)
• Waverly Inspirations Chalk Paint in Dusk
• Paint brush
• Decorative fabric (cut slightly larger than tabletop)
• Mod Podge
• Foam brush
• Waverly Clear Wax (for sealing and protecting)

Step-by-Step: How to Decoupage a Tabletop

Step 1: Prep the Table

Lightly sand the entire table to remove dirt and rough spots.
If there are cracks or imperfections, repair them with wood filler and let dry before sanding smooth. (I used Drydex, which is actually for wall patching, but it’s all I could find at the house in a pinch!)

Step 2: Paint the Base

Apply Waverly Inspirations Chalk Paint in Dusk to the table.

This paint has amazing coverage and requires minimal prep work. I only needed a few touch-ups rather than a full second coat.

Let dry completely.

Step 3: Prepare the Fabric

Cut your fabric slightly larger than the tabletop surface so you can wrap and smooth the edges cleanly.

Because my tabletop was already damaged, fabric decoupage was the perfect solution to give it a fresh new surface.

Step 4: Apply Mod Podge

Brush a generous but even layer of Mod Podge onto the tabletop.

Lay the fabric on top and smooth from the center outward to remove wrinkles and air bubbles. Take your time here — smoothing slowly makes a big difference.

Wrap and smooth the edges around the tabletop.

Step 5: Seal the Fabric

Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge over the top of the fabric to seal everything in.

Let dry completely.

Step 6: Protect the Finish

For added durability, apply Waverly Clear Wax to lock everything in and protect the surface.

This makes it more functional for everyday use — like holding your coffee or a stack of books.

Styling the Finished Table

Once dry, style it next to a reading chair, in a bedroom corner, or in a living room nook. Add:

• A cozy lamp
• A small stack of books
• A coffee mug
• A plant or candle

It’s amazing how something once headed to the trash can become a favorite piece in your home.
