You probably already know that sushi, caffeine, and lunch meats are off the table (pun intended), but there are plenty of other delicious foods that you don’t have to 86 out of your diet.

What Foods To Eat While Pregnant

Some fish low in mercury that you can eat, such as:

  • anchovies
  • cod
  • flounder
  • haddock
  • salmon
  • tilapia
  • trout (freshwater)


What foods not to eat while pregnant

Fish high in mercury (commonly found in polluted water) such as:

  • shark
  • swordfish
  • king mackerel
  • tuna (especially bigeye tuna)
  • marlin
  • tilefish from the Gulf of Mexico


Raw eggs, and other foods that may contain raw egg: 

  • lightly scrambled eggs
  • poached eggs
  • hollandaise sauce
  • homemade mayonnaise
  • some homemade salad dressings
  • homemade ice cream
  • homemade cake icings


Too much animal-based vitamin A (preformed vitamin A)

More than 200 milligrams of caffeine

Raw sprouts, including alfalfa, clover, radish, and mung bean sprouts


Raw meats, hot dogs, lunch meat, and deli meat


Unwashed produce


Unpasteurized milk, cheese, and fruit juice

And it goes without saying – alcohol
