Lemon brownies are a quintessential mashup of chocolate brownies and piquant lemon bars. These soft, lemon-flavored bars are a wonderful treat for summer or for a spring dessert!

Lemon lovers, it’s time to rethink your brownie recipe. These lemon blondies might just be my favorite treat ever! I enjoy appetizing rich and fudgy chocolate bars but there’s just something so special about it being laden with fresh lemons.

Citrus desserts just hit different on a hot summer day or a peaceful afternoon during Spring. The zesty flavors blend beautifully with a refreshing fruit drink or some fresh iced coffee. Sure sounds like an exemplary treat to me.

This lemon brownies recipe is melt-in-your-mouth goodness with how buttery and flavorful it is. The powdered sugar on top adds a hint of sweetness that’s not too overpowering and compliments the lemon flavor beautifully.

If you’re still not sure what dessert to serve for your loved ones, this is it! These lemon brownies are very light and honestly, lemons just tack on a great flavor to any dish and it sure did with this one.

Here’s how to make Lemon Brownies aka Lemon Blondies

I just can’t stop thinking about how GOOD these lemon brownies taste! Even family members that don’t love lemons as much as I suddenly became huge fans.  So if you’re craving a tart and sweet dessert, this will satisfy those!

My best-loved part of this brownie is that they are so easy to make. All you have to do is grab some lemons at the store, some of you probably already have these in your backyard, and mix them with the ingredients I’ve listed here and you’re all done.

Very simple right? But I assure you that the flavors are far from tasting simple. Super fudgy, moist, brownie-like, chewy, but with a bright and marvelous lemon twist. Aren’t you just drooling thinking about this? Because I am!

These bars are so virtuous and they almost remind me of shortbread bars but they’re more fudgy and chewy. Here’s how you can make the best lemon brownies:

1/2 cup salted butter, room temperature

3/4 cup granulated sugar

zest of 1/2 lemon

2 large eggs

1 tablespoon lemon juice

3/4 cup flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

powdered sugar, for sprinkling

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking pan with parchment paper or foil.
  • Sprinkle the 8×8 pan with non-stick cooking spray.
  • In a large bowl, beat butter, sugar, and lemon zest with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after adding each one.
  • Add lemon juice and beat well.
  • Add in the flour and baking powder and combine well.
  • Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes.
  • Let cool completely for 30 minutes – 1 hour and then sprinkle the cooled brownies with powdered sugar.

Can these Lemon Brownies be made Gluten-Free?

Absolutely. I suggest using an esteemed gluten-free baking mix if you want this alternative.

Do these Lemon Brownies need to be Refrigerated?

You can leave them on the counter after making them but if you have leftovers, you can put them in the refrigerator if you like.

Can Lemon Blondies be frozen?

They can be! I do recommend freezing the brownies before glazing though, and then you can glaze them again on the day you want to serve them. Just remember to wrap the cooled brownies completely in plastic without slicing them, then in heavy foil. This can last up to 2 months!

Can you make Lemon Brownies ahead?

If the situation requires you to pre-make these, what you can do is bake the brownies, cool them completely, wrap them in plastic then refrigerate them for 2 days. Glaze them on the day you’ll serve.

Can I double the recipe and bake it in a 9×13 pan?

It is possible, but the baking time will be extended.

How long do these Lemon Brownies last?

If you store the cut brownies in an airtight container at room temperature, they’re finest to be eaten within 1 to 2 days, for the uncut brownies, wrapped in plastic and stored at room temperature, they can last up to 4 days.

Lemon Brownies AKA Lemon Blondies Tips:

  • If you love lemon as much as I do, don’t hesitate to add more zest and juice to the batter.
  • Line your pan with parchment or foil for a trouble-free cleanup.
  • Replace gluten-free flour cup with all-purpose flour to make GF brownies.

As much as irresistible chocolate is, finding ways to incorporate other ingredients into your desserts or snacks is a fun way to boost a recipe. It’s fun to try something new and lemon is an awesome way to do that!

Homemade blondies topped with powdered sugar are super simple to make and they are to do for delicious!
