This french dip recipe is super simple to make and only contains 3 ingredients! A round roast is slow cooked with beef broth and worcestershire sauce for a unbelievable homemade au jus. The meat melts in your mouth! You can add onions, garlic and even thyme to the slow cooker if your family prefers more flavor.

How to Make Au Jus for French Dip

The au jus is simply the liquid that the roast is slow cooked in. If you prefer a thicker au jus simply remove the roast from the slow cooker. Next, add a tiny bit of cornstarch to the slow cooker to thicken.

You can add the shredded roast back into the slow cooker to soak up the deliciousness or put some in a bowl to dip your french dip sandwich in. It’s completely up to your preference.

  • Lean Round Roast – you can use a chuck or rump roast. The roast slow cooks until tender and falls apart. The trick is slow cooking the meat and plenty of liquid from the beef broth.
  • Bread – we prefer a french baguette style roll. They can be found in the bakery section of your local grocery store. However, you can use any sub roll, ciabatta buns and even pretzel rolls if you prefer.
  • Au Jus – it’s all about the juices in the slow cooker that makes this a french dip! This also allows the bread to soften a bit and more enjoyable to eat.
  • Cheese – to each their own here. If you would like to add cheese, slices of mozzarella or provolone go great!
  • Optional Ingredients – You can season the roast with garlic, rosemary, thyme, salt and pepper before placing in the slow cooker for added flavors. In addition, slow cooking onions and bell peppers in the crock pot about an hour before serving goes great on the sandwich.
