Spring break is the perfect opportunity to grab the family and do something together! If you’re on a budget, a big expensive trip might not be in the cards, but don’t let that discourage you from planning something fun!

Spring Break is approaching fast! If you can’t afford a huge trip this year because you’re on a budget or paying off debt, no worries. I have some ideas that the whole family will love, and they won’t bust the budget.

If expensive water parks, theme parks, or all inclusive resorts seem a little too far out of reach, check out this list for the perfect spring break destination on a budget.

1. Beach Trip (Close to Home)

  • Why? A beach trip doesn’t have to be expensive if you choose a local or nearby beach. You can spend time building sandcastles, collecting shells, and swimming or splashing in the shallow water.
  • You would be surprised at the amount of beautiful beaches that are man made at lakes. They are the perfect place to get a beach vacation vibe, without the big trip for those of you that are “land locked”.
  • Budget Tips: Pack your own snacks, drinks, and beach gear. Look for free beach access areas or choose state beaches with affordable entry fees.

2. National Parks Visit

  • Why? National parks offer beautiful scenery, wildlife, and outdoor activities like hiking, picnicking, and nature walks.
  • The road trip to a National Park near you will offer scenic drives and quality time with family that you simply can’t buy!
  • Budget Tips: Many national parks offer free or low-cost entry days, or you can purchase an annual pass to save money on multiple visits.

3. Camping Trip

  • Why? Camping is an excellent low-cost family activity that offers a break from daily routines while connecting with nature.
  • Camping in late March can provide some amazing weather that you can’t find in the summer months. The spring months are a great time to get outside and enjoy nature with the family before it gets too hot. Less bugs too!
  • Budget Tips: Check out local campgrounds or state parks, which can have very affordable rates. You can even try backyard camping if you’re looking to stay close to home.

4. Zoo or Aquarium Visit

  • Why? A visit to the zoo or aquarium is educational and fun, with plenty of interactive exhibits for young kids to enjoy.
  • Most large cities have a high quality zoo or aquarium that make a great place for young children and older kids alike to enjoy! You should be able to find one close to you that makes for an easy day trip.
  • Budget Tips: Look for discounts, family passes, or free entry days. Many zoos offer reduced prices during off-peak seasons.

5. Nature Scavenger Hunt

  • Why? Create a scavenger hunt in your backyard, a local park, or nearby nature trails. It’s a fun and engaging way to explore the outdoors with kids.
  • This is something you can do right from the comfort of your own home. If travel feels difficult because of work schedules or cost, create fun experiences at home with family.
  • Budget Tips: This activity is entirely free, just print out a scavenger hunt list or create your own!

6. Museum Exploration (Children’s Museum or Science Centers)

  • Why? Many cities have affordable children’s museums, science centers, or local history museums that are both fun and educational.
  • Look for a school district in the surrounding area that has a spring break a different week from you so you can cut down on the crowds!
  • Budget Tips: Look for deals or free entry days, and consider memberships that may offer discounts on multiple visits.

7. Farm Visit or U-Pick Farm

  • Why? Visiting a farm to see animals or pick fresh produce can be a great way to spend a day outdoors, especially for younger kids who enjoy seeing animals up close.
  • This is a fun and interactive way for kids to enjoy the great outdoors! If you pick apples or blueberries, you can have a baking session when you return home, adding to the spring break activity line up!
  • Budget Tips: Many farms offer low-cost or even free visits for families, especially in rural areas. You can also find U-pick farms where families can pick their own fruits and vegetables at affordable prices.

8. Staycation with Local Attractions

  • Why? Explore local attractions, like visiting nearby parks, playgrounds, botanical gardens, or local historical sites you may not have seen before.
  • One of my favorite family vacations was when we simply stayed at a local hotel, enjoyed the pool, and went to some restaurants we usually would not go to on a normal week.
  • Budget Tips: Take advantage of local tourism websites for discounts and deals on tickets to family-friendly attractions.

9. DIY Movie Day (Home Theater)

  • Why? Set up a movie marathon day at home with your kids’ favorite films, complete with popcorn, cozy blankets, and a homemade concession stand.
  • Movie night can be extra special with a few fun additions like dollar store snacks and a fun set up!
  • Budget Tips: This is completely free if you already have the movies or can stream them online.

10. Biking Adventure

  • Why? If your kids can ride a bike, a biking day at a local park or along a safe trail can be a great way to enjoy nature and get some exercise.
  • Warm weather and outdoor adventures will make your spring break trip memorable and and fun, even if your just staying in your home town.
  • Budget Tips: If you already have bikes, this activity costs nothing but the time you spend exploring new routes.

11. DIY Craft and Art Day

  • Why? Create a fun art day with the family, making crafts or paintings that the kids can take home as souvenirs of the spring break.
  • Try the painted rock trend and hide them in a park for someone else to find, or make a few DIY gifts to drop off at friends and neighbor homes.
  • Budget Tips: Use supplies you already have at home or visit a dollar store for affordable art materials.

12. Local Playground or Splash Pad

  • Why? Head to a local park with a playground or splash pad. These spots are usually free and can keep the kids entertained for hours.
  • These are probably the first warm days you are experiencing, so make sure to take advantage! Kids always love to get in the water if there is an open splash pad nearby.
  • Budget Tips: Pack a picnic to enjoy lunch in the park, which will save you money on dining out.

13. Library Storytime & Activities

  • Why? Many libraries host free storytimes, craft sessions, and activities for kids. Check out what’s available in your area for a fun, educational outing.
  • Our local libraries are packed with scheduled activities, especially during spring break. Check and see if you can get a monthly calendar to attend some fun activities, or simply head to the library for a stack of good books to enjoy!
  • Budget Tips: Library programs are typically free, and you can borrow books, games, and other materials for at-home entertainment.

14. Road Trip to a Nearby Town

  • Why? Take a short road trip to explore a nearby town or city, visit local landmarks, or try a unique local activity.
  • Do you live a short drive away from historic sites, parks, or beaches? This is the perfect time to explore your area!
  • Budget Tips: Pack meals and snacks for the road to save money, and check out local websites for free or low-cost activities.

15. Spring Picnic in the Park

  • Why? A simple picnic in the park with your family can be a low-cost, enjoyable way to spend the day outdoors.
  • There’s just something about eating outside on a picnic blanket that’s extra fun! Pack up the whole family and spend the day enjoying each other and the spring weather.
  • Budget Tips: Pack your own food, bring a blanket, and let the kids play at the park’s playground.

The best spring break destinations don’t have to cost a lot! As long as you have a some creativity, a plan, and friends and family to enjoy, you can have a fantastic spring break on a budget this year!
